Charles Michael "Mike" Fitzgerald, 56, of Westminster died Wednesday, June 25, 2008 at his residence after complications from heart surgery.
Born July 17, 1951, in Baltimore, he was the son of the late James and Anna Marie Strieb Fitzgerald. He was the husband of Charlene Mae Schweinsberg Fitzgerald, whom he married in August 1972.
He graduated from Mergenthaler Vocational High School, then enlisted in the Army and served as a member of the Army Intelligence, stationed in Japan from 1969 to 1971.
Following his military service, he worked construction before establishing his own businesses, Clover Walls and Ceilings, and, later, Prospect Remodeling. After receiving his Associate of Arts degree from Catonsville Community College in 1983, he began working for State Farm Insurance before moving on to Donegal Mutual Insurance, United States Automobile Association and recently Travelers. While working in the insurance business, he earned his Chartered Properties Casualty Underwriters Designation.
He was active in the community, serving as founder of the Taneytown Greentoppers Majorette and Drum Corps. He was a former chairman of the Carroll County Recreation and Parks Board, served on the Carroll County Community College board, was a former state chairman of MADD for Maryland, as well as the Jaycees, and received numerous awards of appreciation for his community service.
He was an avid collector of memorabilia such as sports items, communications equipment used by Army Intelligence from his service era and souvenirs from his travels. He also was a season ticket holder of the Baltimore Ravens. He enjoyed traveling, amateur photography, reading about American and military history, updating and working on computers and spending time with his grandchildren. Before he died, he was able to see the Panama Canal with his wife.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are children and spouses Sandra Marie and Perry Willcox, and David Michael and Jennifer Fitzgerald, all of Westminster, and Diane Michele and Larry Warch II of Taneytown; grandchildren Madelyn Willcox, Gavin and Sean Fitzgerald; a stepbrother, Leroy Hohenberger; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a stepsister, Phyllis Holbruner; a stepbrother, Edward Hohenberger; and a stepmother, Edna Fitzgerald.
A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Pritts Funeral Home & Chapel, 412 Washington Road, Westminster, with Gary Abrecht officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
