John was born in Ohio, the son of German immigrants.
He married Ellen Ulery on February 14, 1858 in Morrow County. After their marriage, the couple settled next to Ellen's parents where John was a farmer. There, the couple had two children: Alfred, and Sarah who appeared to have died young.
John and Ellen had spent some time near Pokagon, Cass County, Michigan where he enlisted in the Civil War. He served as a private in Company I of the 12th Michigan Infantry, where he enlisted on February 21, 1865, and was mustered out on February 15, 1866 at Camden, Arkansas.
John and his family were in Winfield, Lake County, Indiana by 1870 where John farmed. The following children are reported in the census records as being born in Indiana: Theodore, Frederick, Jennie, Alva, and Willie.
