Keith & Keith Funeral Home

YAKIMA - John P. Fischer, 91, passed away on March 15, 2007, at Summitview Healthcare Center.

Our Dad was born April 6, 1915, in Ipswich, SD, to Joseph and Eva (Lacher) Fischer, the second oldest of 13 children.

Dad spent his early years helping his parents run the family farm. He served his country by joining the Civilian Conservation Corps. His early career was with the railroad. Dad graduated from Smith Barber College in Sioux City, Iowa. He began his barbering career in Trail City, SD, where he met our Mom, the love of his life, Olivia Goeden. They were married on February 10, 1941, In Trail City. They started their young family and moved to Yakima with Jim and Joyce in the early 1940's. Their marriage was blessed with seven children.

Dad established Jack's Barber Shop in Union Gap, moving his shop to Tieton Drive in the early '70's. On his Mondays off, he volunteered his time and talent to the residents of Yakima Valley School. He continued to cut hair into his late 80's.

Dad had many civic involvements including the Union Gap Lions Club, the Toastmasters, the St. Vincent DePaul Society, the Knights of Columbus, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He was an active member of St. Paul's Parish and subsequently Holy Redeemer Church, where he was a Eucharistic Minister.

Dad enjoyed dancing, bowling, playing cards and organizing bus trips to Nevada where one year he won a very large jackpot. Dad especially enjoyed family gatherings with all his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Dad was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Eva, his sons John (Jackie) and Bernard, his brothers Joe, Cap, Andy, Tony and Leo, and his sister Christine Zimmerman.

Dad is survived by his beloved wife, Olivia, his son, Jim (Connie) Fischer of Olympia, WA; daughters Joyce (Gary) Bogatich and Rose (Jerry) Jones both of Yakima, WA; Kathy (Andy) Benoit of Long Beach, WA; and Debi (Bill) Hinze of Naches, WA; brothers Frank, Adam, Al and Mike; sisters Carolyn Johnson and Barbara Irwin; 13 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to the entire staff of Summitview Health Care Center, Memorial Hospital's ER and 2 West staff, and Dr. David Doornink. A very special thank you to Betty and David with Memorial Hospice, our guiding lights in some very tough times.

Visitation will be from 12 noon to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Keith & Keith Ninth Avenue Chapel. A vigil service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, March 18 at the Keith & Keith Ninth Avenue Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 19, 2007 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. Concluding services and burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
