Dr. Henry Fischer was the son of John and Mary (Jung) Fischer. He was not quite seven years old when his father died in 1869 leaving a widow and six young children. Although his grandparents, Peter and Catherine Jung, and his uncle, Peter Jung, lived next door to the family, it was not an easy time for them without their father.

Henry, however, was an enterprising and capable young man. At a young age he began working as an apprentice druggist with Dr. G. Doeller. In 1886 Henry left Dr. Doeller to begin working for Dr. John C. Schwartz, also a druggist, and ultimately becoming the head clerk.

On August 22, 1888 Henry married Katherine Mart Schwenn, the daughter of the late John F. and Mary (Niederman) Schwenn. They shared a common bond in the loss of their fathers when they were young. Kate's father died when she was barely thirteen years old leaving a widow and seven children, one born posthumously.

The young couple quickly formed their own family. Their first child, a daughter they named Irma Elizabeth, was born exactly one year and one week after their marriage and a son, Michael Stanley was born two years later on July 12, 1891. Despite the early loss and the hardship of Henry's childhood, it appeared that life was now progressing well, both professionally and personally. Yet three short years later, at the age of twenty-eight, Henry was gone.

Like his father before him, Henry died far before his time, leaving his widow and young children to mourn their loss.
