Director. Producer. Robert "Bob" Finkel had notable credits on "The Eddie Fisher Show", "The Dinah Shore Chevy Show" and "The Andy Williams Show". Finkel also produced multiple broadcasts of "The People's Choice Awards", the Oscars and the Emmy Awards. He also produced a televised comeback concert for singer Elvis Presley in 1968. Robert S. Finkel was born on March 25, 1918 Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the only son of William and Esther Finkel. Finkel had two sisters; Margery and Sally. His father owned several nickelodeon movie theaters in and around Philadelphia. He graduated from the Carnegie Mellon University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in drama. After college, Finkel secured several odd jobs including dancing in the Keith Circuit, being the resident director of the Wharf Theater in Provincetown, Massachusetts and as director and lighting manager at the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera Company. Finkel enlisted and served in the Army Signal Corps during World War II. He was stationed in Burma. He came back from the war in 1946. Finkel entered the medium of television in 1950, directing an episode of ABC's "Mysteries of Chinatown". From there, his career skyrocketed. Over the next decade, Finkel would earn producing, directing and writing credits on episodes of "The Colgate Comedy Hour", "Gruen Guild Theater", "City Detective", "The Tennessee Ernie Ford Show" and "The Dinah Shore Chevy Show". Finkel's career would crest over the next decade and a half, as he produced the Primetime Emmy Awards in 1960 and "The Andy Williams Show" during the mid-1960s. For his work on "The Andy Williams Show", Finkel was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award in 1965 and won two Primetime Emmy Awards in 1966 and 1967. In 1968, Finkel produced and wrote material for the highly publicised "Elvis: '68 Comeback Special". Finkel also produced television specials for Bing Crosby, Wayne Crosby and John Denver going into the 1970s and 1980s. During this same time, Finkel produced both the 1972 Oscar and Emmy award shows and he directed episodes of "Barney Miller", "The Bob Newhart Show" and "Circus of the Stars". Finkel's last credit was directing the 1996 made-for-television movie "Have You Seen My Son" for ABC. Outside of his career as a director and producer, Finkel served as president of the Producers Guild of America from 1969-1971. In 1994, he became only the fourth PGA member honored with the Charles FitzSimons Lifetime Membership Award for his outstanding service to the Guild. Finkel was also a member of Writers Guild of America, West, Directors Guild of America, Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, American Federation of Musicians, Actors' Equity Association, and the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society. Finkel also served on staff at the universities of UCLA and USC. He also taught seminars for the American Film Institute during the 1980s and 1990s. Finkel was married once and had two daughters; Terry Lee Baldwin and Pamela Ann Lavaf. Finkel's grandson, Drew Baldwin, is also a member of the Producers Guild. Finkel died on April 30, 2012 in Beverly Hills from an age-related illness at the age of 94. He was survived by his wife Jane, daughter Terry and other relatives.
