Charles Harrison Fields was born 15 July 1841 in Warren County, Pennsylvania. His parents were Alexander G. Fields and Charlotte Betsey Taylor. Charles was one of 13 or 15 children (of whom 8 survived into adulthood). The thought is he was named Charles in honor of his older brother Charles Perry Fields who is believed to have died shortly after the 1840 census while he was just a little boy. (Family Source).

He was a strict, rigid, and stern man. Not real loving. (Family Source).

Religion: Seventh-day Adventist (SDA).

He was a Mason. In one family photo he is wearing a Mason's pin.

m. (1) 13 Sep 1869: Phoebe Lucille Myers married Charles Harrison Fields in Hopkinton, Delaware County, Iowa, just west of Dubuque.

9-13-1869: Phebe L. Myers married C. H. Fields September 13, 1869 at Hopkinton,
Deleware, Iowa; they were married by Sam'l Hodges V.D.M. The latter is
the same person who married Z. T. Fields & Sarah Jane Douglas Sept. 26,

Manchester, Iowa.
Zachary Taylor Fields and Charles Harrison Fields are brothers.
[Phoebe was the daughter of Alexander G. (B.?) Myers and Lucy (Lucille Myers) of New York. Phoebe had been born in New York (June 1853?), but the family moved shortly thereafter to Delaware County, Iowa. Charles was 28 and Phebe 16 when they were married. Charles' brother, Zachary Fields was married in the same town by the same official a few weeks later. Earlier this same year, Charles' two older brothers, Thomas and Dewitt settled in O'Brien County in the northwest part of Iowa. (May 19, 1869) -- Primghar, O'brien County, Iowa.

1870 Census: Shortly after their marriage, Charles and Phoebe decided to join his brothers in O'Brien County. Charles and Phebe are listed in the 1870 census for O'Brien County, Iowa. Charles (29) and wife Phebe (19), [sic]) are living with brother Thomas and family. Charles is working as a shoemaker. Charles and Phebe would later settle on Sec. 20 near Calumet, in Liberty, O'Brien, Iowa. Brother Dewitt Fields also settled in O'Brien County. Charles and Phebe had three children while living in O'Brien--Lucy Charlotte, born Feb 1871; Thomas B. Fields, born in Nov 1876; and Carrie, born in Dec. 1877. Some family records suggest that Lucy Charlotte was born in Hopkinton, Delaware County, Iowa.

Charles is listed in the D.A.W. Perkins "History of O'Brien County" as living in the same section as his wife's sister and husband (William Milton and Abigail Breyfogle). Several of the Fields brothers are also listed in "Old Soldiers Who Have Lived in O'Brien County."

Sometime prior to 1880 Charles and his brothers Thomas and Zac decided to move their families to Beaver, Decatur Township, Kansas. Brother Dewitt decided to stay back in O'Brien County, Iowa.

1880 Census: During the 1880 census Charles and Phebe Fields are living in Beaver, Decatur Township in Kansas. Their last name is incorrectly spelled "Phields." Charles is 35 (should be 39)--both of his parents are listed as from New York. Phebe's age is given as 30 (at little off). Her parents are listed as from Massachusetts. In the household are Lucy (9), Thomas (4) and Carrie (2). All three of the children were born in Iowa. Charles' occupation is farming. Charles' brothers, Thomas and Zac, live with their families nearby.

1888 the family moved again, this time to Taylor, Loup County, Nebraska. This was a newly formed town and county (both established in 1883). By 1890, when the Fields lived there, the county had 1662 inhabitants. Mrs. C.H. Fields appears in the Nebraska State Gazetteer Business Directory and Farmer list for 1890-1891 for Taylor. She is listed for millinery work. Taylor had a large wind mill for processing grain. C. H. Fields is listed as the father of children in School Dist. #5, Taylor NE, Thomas 17, Carrie 14, and Lucinda 10. (C.H. Fields and Lucy also appear in the 1883-1983 Index of Loup County, Taylor, Nebraska Centennial 1883-1983, as does Frank Butka, Jim's brother who would marry Lucy Fields).

Also listed in the Gazetteer under the Farmer's Directory section are James Butka and [brother] Francis (Frank) B. Butka. On 22 Feb 1888 oldest daughter Lucy Charlotte "Daisy" Fields married James "Jim" Butka. Although Jim was born in Iowa (25 March 1863), his folks were from Bohemia. The wedding took place in the Pavillion Hotel in Taylor (picture at right--due north of Kearny on Hwy. 183) Both Lucy and Jim appear in the Wedding Index for Loup County Vol 1, p 65. Jim was almost 25 and Lucy was 17 when they got married.

Phoebe was listed as the first teacher in Loup County, Nebraska and taught three months for $20.
(I don't know about Mrs. Myers Fields being the first teacher in Loup County. We had teachers here as early as 1876 before the county was organized but was under the jurisdiction of Valley County at the time. -Kevin Brown, President of Loup County Historic Society.)

Phoebe Lucille Myers (Fields) was also listed in the Business Directory for 1890-1891 in Taylor, Loup County, Nebraska: "Mrs. C. H. Fields Millinery." (The GAZETTE of Nebraska lists Mrs. Fields as in the millinery business.)

Lucy Fields (his daughter) was teaching in District #18 Butka about the time she was married to James Butka. She also taught a term in District #17 Loup County.

In about 1888 Charles H. Fields was elected Treasurer of Loup County, Nebraska.
C.H. Fields was the Loup County Treasurer in Taylor (Nebraska) from approximately 1889 to 1892.
Evidence for Mr. Fields serving as Loup County Treasurer from approximately 1889 to 1892 come from Loup County records and were recorded in the book, LOUP COUNTY CENTENNIAL BOOK, 1883-1983, by the Centennial Commitee, Burwell, NE: Tribune Publishing, 1984, page 197, by Virginia Perkins Doty, under the Chapter XIV: Elected Officials of Loup County, 1883-1982. She cites as her sources Books 1-4 in the Clerk's Office of the Loup County Court House.

C. H. Fields was elected Treasurer of Loup County, Nebraska and Frank Butka was a member of the first Board of Education and James Butka was later added as a member of the Board of Education.

C.H. Fields' wife is listed as Phebe Myers Fields and they were listed as married in 1869 in Iowa.
I show their children and birth dates listed as S.B., 1866; M.C., 1879; and L.A., 1883.
We show Lucy's name as Lucy Charlotte Fields.
(The Fields children's names and dates of birth came from the school census records of School District #5 Taylor, Nebraska from the 1880s.)

James Butka (son-in-law) and Francis "Frank" B. Butka (James' brother) were listed in the Farmers list for 1890-1891. (The Farmers List is on-line for 1890-1891on our Loup County website and that's where that information came from.)

1894 the Butkas and the Fields moved from Loup County, Nebraska, and never returned.
This is probably why the Butka Post Office moved.

Sometime during the mid 1890's Charles and Phebe decided to move to Columbia, Oklahoma. Daughter Carrie married Nelson "Nelt" Lincoln Huling in 1897 in Oklahoma. Nelt's father, James, was from New York and his mother Mary was from Maine. Nelt was born in Illinois (Nov 1861). He was 35 and Carrie 19 when they were married. Nelt and Carrie would eventually settle in Columbia, Oklahoma near both of their parents (1900 census). About this same time, brother Thomas B. Fields married a lady named Lena.

A couple of years after Carrie was married, Charles and Phoebe's youngest child, daughter Lurinda Abagail married Sylvester Oscar Washburn on 23 Oct 1899 in Enid, Oklahoma. Oscar was 23 and Rinda was 16 when they were married.

Charles, Phoebe, son Thomas B., and father-in-law Alexander B. Myers (or Meyer) are living in Columbia, Kingfisher County, Oklahoma at the time of the 1900 census (14 June); their daughter, Lurinda seems to have met Oscar Washburn there in 1899.

d. Abt Oct 1932: Charles Harrison Fields died October 1932 in Boyle Heights, Los Angeles County, California. He was 92 years old.

He was buried in Los Angeles County, California, on 10-22-1932 (Cemetery Records). [Probably died in week prior to this date.]

The San Gabriel DuBois Mortuary which was used has long been closed as of 2005, but the records are stored (now gone) at Pierce Brothers Simone DuBois Mortuary, 1136 E. Las Tunas Drive, San Gabriel, California 91776, phone (626) 287-0595. They claimed they do not have any old records any more.

The County of Los Angeles Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk certified that they searched the Death indexes from January 1932 to December 1932 and do not find a Charles Harrison Fields.
They said the record could be obtained from the Department of Health Services, Office of Vital Records - M.S. 5103, P.O. Box 997410, Sacramento, CA 95899-7410.
[Upon inquiry at D.H.S., they sent a Standard Certificate of Death for a Charles H. Fields who died in Clear Creek Dist., Shasta County, CA on 6-11-1935 and who had been born 1-14-1857 in California, with his parents unknown and the informant was Raymond Fields from Redding, CA. This is not our relative. I don't know if they pulled the wrong record or if possibly Charles Harrison Fields died in a state other than California and was sent to California for burial.]

Myers (or Meyer) are living in Columbia, Kingfisher County, Oklahoma at the time of the 1900 census (14 June); their daughter, Lurinda seems to have met Oscar Washburn there in 1899.

d. 1931. (Wynona).

Buried at Grand View Cemetery, 1341 Glenwood Road, Glendale, Los Angeles County, California 91201, (818) 242-2697, in Grave 6, Lot 12, Section G.
There is NO MARKER. But in process of trying to get a joint marker in 2006-2011, but cemetery is not open for that due to lawsuit.
[Joint marker for Charles, Nelson, Lucy, and Carol].

His son-in-law, Nelson "Nelt" Lincoln Huling's urn was later buried in the same plot on 5-20-1937.
