Businessman. He was a entrepreneur, most noted as a pioneer in the telegraph industry. In the early 1850s, he was successful in the paper mill business when became interested in the telegraph field. With his civil engineer brother Matthew and Frederick Newton Gisborne, they worked on the project of for a telegraph across to Newfoundland from the US in 1854. Having secured all the practicable landing rights on the American side of the ocean, he with John W. Brett, approached Sir Charles Bright in London, pursue a telegraph cable across the ocean and the Atlantic Telegraph Company was organized in December 1856. Unsuccessful attempts to lay the cable were made in August 1857 and in June 1858, but the complete cable was done in August 1858. Thus on August 16, 1858, the first Trans-Atlantic telegraph cable system was officially opened when Queen Victoria sent President James Buchanan a message in Morse code. For this achievement, he received a gold medal form the US Congress, plus many other honors both at home and abroad. In 1877, Field bought a controlling interest in the New York Elevated Railroad Company, controlling the Third and Ninth Avenue lines, of which he was president (1877-80). (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
