On January 15, 1935, Vera and Walter Rudolph Rieber were married in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Their marriage was blessed with five children, Marlene, Merlyn, Carolyn, Phyllis and Sandra. As a young man, Walter started trucking and farming in the Minden, Iowa area. In 1947, Walter and Vera moved their family to the Sandhills of Nebraska and owned a cattle ranch for ten years. While living in Dunning, Vera owned and operated two cafes. They then moved back to Iowa near Carson where they farmed and fed cattle until Walter retired in 1975.
Vera enjoyed being a homemaker and taking care of her family. She enjoyed cooking, cake decorating, sewing, quilting, playing cards, fishing and traveling. In 1985, she won the Iowa Anglers Award for catching an 8½ pound bass. Another highlight of her life was being surprised by an honorary high school diploma in 2003, a part of the "Dreams Come True" program.
Vera and Walter had been married 55 years at the time of Walter's death on May 2, 1990. Vera continued to live in Carson for a few years and then moved to an apartment in Council Bluffs at Risen Son Christian Village. In 1998, due to failing health, she moved to the Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow, Nebraska. Vera died at Heritage Hall on October 9, 2005, at the age of 92 years, six months, and one day.
Vera was preceded in death by five infant siblings; her parents; husband Walter; brothers Ralph Fichter and Archie Fichter; half brothers Albert Fichter, Jay Fichter, and Frank Fichter; sister Vivian Fichter, and half sister Edna Spence.
She is survived by her daughters Marlene Van Diest and husband Norval of Dunning, NE, Carolyn Collier and husband Steve of Poncha Springs, CO, Phyllis Wilhelm and husband Jim of Sheridan, WY and Sandra Bolton and husband Jim of Akron, IA; son Merlyn Rieber and wife Sharon of Loup City, NE; 14 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren; sisters Dorothy Slaughter of Carson, IA, Lela Donahue of Omaha, NE, Bonnie Sales of Council Bluffs, IA; nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
