Mary Coniglio Obituary

A Monterey Pioneer Dies. Mary Elizabeth Ferrante Coniglio died on April 15, 2005 in her family home in Monterey surrounded by members of her loving family. Mrs. Coniglio was the last surviving daughter of Pietro Ferrante who was the founding father and instrumental in starting the Monterey Sardine Industry as a fisherman and later the owner of several canneries on Cannery Row. Mrs. Coniglio came to Monterey at the age of three in 1906, and watched what was a small fishing village develop into the wonderful City of Monterey that we now enjoy. The second of six daughters, in her early years she assisted her mother with family chores as her family grew and her father business interests succeeded. In 1922 she married Horace Coniglio and their wedding was the social event of the year. She and her husband were married for sixty-five years until his death in 1987. Mrs. Coniglio had three sons, Philip, Peter and John. Her son John predeceased her. She was the matriarch of her large and extended family and in July, she would have been 102 years old. Vibrant and cognizant until the very end, she is remembered as a elegant dignified lady whose wisdom and counsel will long be remembered by family and friends. Her cooking was legendary, and her family and holiday dinners at the family summer home in Carmel Valley was frequented by many friends and guests over the years. In her early years she was active in the Mother's Club and the Alter Society, and was a volunteer for drives for the Cancer Society, the Red Cross, and the Heart Association. However, her primary focus in life was that of a wife, a mother, and a grandmother. She leaves her two sons Philip and Peter, twelve grandchildren, and sixteen great grandchildren. Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday April 21 at San Carlos Cathedral, 500 Church Street, Monterey. Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday April 22 also at San Carlos Cathedral.
