---
Elsie Lillian (Johnson) Fernau, the third child of John G. and Ragnhild M. (Petersson) Johnson, was born April 22, 1913, at Ainsworth.
Elsie resided in Brown County until January 2003, when she moved to Norfolk to be near her daughter. She and her 10 brothers and sisters grew up in Brown County where they attended rural schools. She graduated from Ainsworth High School with the class of 1932.
On Oct. 12, 1935, she married Lawrence C. Fernau at Ainsworth. To this union three children were born, Lyle Duane, Louise Elaine and Larry William. They celebrated their 62nd anniversary in 1997. Lawrence and Elsie lived on farms on Buffalo Flats until they moved to Ainsworth in August of 1968. Elsie was employed in later years by Spearman's IGA, Rose Grocery, Morrow's Drive-In, Spearman's Hardware and Ainsworth Star Journal.
On April 15, 2004, Elsie had been a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ for 50 years. She belonged to numerous organizations. She was a charter member of Home Circle Club and AGG Extension Club; also a long-time member of the Jewel Rebekah Lodge 319, Rebekah Kensington and Past Noble Grand. After moving to Ainsworth she also belonged for a time to Ainsworth Garden Club, W.W. Club and Hi-Upitty Craft Club.
Elsie's life was her family, and despite much care and concern, she was to know the loss of both sons and a grandson. At a happier time in her life she was able to travel to Sweden with her sister, Alice, and her brother-in-law, John, to meet their parents' families. An extended family was something they had never known.
Elsie was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence, in 1998; son Larry in 1972, son Lyle in 2004, and grandson Stanley, also in 2004; her parents; nine brothers and sisters, Mary, Harold, Roy, Alice, Johnny, Martha, Lloyd, Gene and Donald.
She leaves to mourn her passing one daughter, Louise and her husband, Ron Wilson of Norfolk; one daughter-in-law, Marleen of Chadron; four grandchildren, Anissa Wilson of Omaha, Steve Fernau and wife Connie of Atkinson, Scott Fernau and wife Rebecca of Chadron, Sue Fernau of Butte; seven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Doris and husband Gus Bauman of Belton, Mo.; four sisters-in-law, Mercedes and Nellie Johnson of Ainsworth, Carol Johnson and Ramona Conrad of Pine, Ariz.; and many nieces, nephews and good friends.
Music was provided by Dorie Palmer and Kathy Bennett. A meditative song selection of "Go Rest High On That Mountain" was played on the organ by Dorie as well as a record album selection, "Just Beyond The Moon," as a tribute to Elsie. "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Til We Meet Again" was sung by Kathy Bennett.
Pallbearers were Ron Wilson, Duane Johnson, Dean Painter, Scott S. Fernau, Mike Johnson, Scott A. Fernau and Steve Fernau. Honorary pallbearers included were Chet and Denise See, Ray and Shirley Davis, Wiley and Shirley Lentz, Pauline Dau and Marguerite Swett.
Memorials have been suggested to the donor's choice.
