Life long area rancher, Alfredo Fernandez went home to be with the Lord and join his wife, Frances on Thursday January 26, 2012.
Alfredo was born on November 19, 1917 in Palo Blanco, NM to the late Samuel Fernandez and Delfinia Fernandez.
Alfredo was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Fernandez, in 2006, two brothers, Tony Fernandez and Bonnie Fernandez, three sisters, Elosia Maestas, Felia Maestas and Mickey-Tafoya. Alfredo was also preceded by a special brother-in law, Baltazar Avila who passed away a couple of days after Alfredo and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law and one nephew, Charles Avila on September 9, 2011. Alfredo is survived by one son, Donny Fernandez and his wife, Dolores of Raton, four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren. Also one brother, Steve Fernandez and his wife, Elsie of Springer, several nieces and nephews also survive.
Alfredo was a Charter member of the Knights of Columbus in Springer, as well as a past board member of the Farmers Home Administration.
Alfredo often told stories of traveling by covered wagon several times with his grandfather to Taos in the 1920s, then going from there to Santa Fe. This trip took two weeks. Alfredo was always ready to help anyone how ever he could. Alfredo and his grandfather and brothers ran a large sheep and cattle operation at one time in the Chico area. Alfredo shared stories of driving lambs and calves to the Folsom stockyards to send them off to market by train in the 1930s. If he ever got put in a working chute with a cow he would always win the kicking contest. His love for animals was hard for anyone to match.
Alfredo will be laid to rest next to his wife and back to the land he worked, cherished, walked and loved at Palo Blanco. Alfredo will be greatly missed by those who knew him.
Recitation of the Most Holy Rosary will be held at Saint Patrick-St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Raton on Thursday morning February 2, 2012 at 9:30 a.m. with the Mass of the Resurrection o follow at 10:00 a.m. with Father Daniel Balizan as the celebrant. Rite of committal and interment will follow at the Palo Blanco Cemetery in Palo Blanco, NM. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Palo Blanco Cemetery Fund care of Purdy Romero, HCR.60 Box 5, Springer, New Mexico.
