DORIS LOUISE (WATERS) FENIX
FAIRLAND, Okla. - Doris Louise (Waters) Fenix, 87, of Fairland, Okla., died at 5:30 p.m. on October 6, 2001 at her home after a long illness.
Doris was born August 31, 1914, in Joplin, Mo., where she grew up and attended school. She was the first of four daughters of E. Ellsworth and Hazel D. Waters. She married Taylor M. Fenix on February 5, 1934. Taylor died on August 30, 1997.
Survivors include: her two sons, Robert Fenix, Holiday Island, Ark., and James Fenix, Springfield, Va.; four grandchildren, Jackson Taylor Fenix, Kristin Lee Fenix, Stefanie Lynne Fenix, and Douglas Taylor Fenix; two great-granddaughters, Heather Renee Fenix, and Tonya Sue Fenix. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, and all of her aunts and uncles.
Since 1977, she has lived at the same home she and Taylor built east of Fairland. Previously, she and Taylor lived in Grove (1971-1977); Safford, Ariz., (1964-1966); Fayetteville, Ark., (1957-1962); Placerville, Calif., (1940-1957), and Joplin, Mo., (1950-1951, 1953, 1966-1970). From 1949-1977 Taylor constructed houses and Doris helped in the planning and decorating. While living in Placerville, Calif., from 1947-1957, Doris belonged to church groups and other benevolent organizations.
Doris loved to read and read hundreds of books. In about 1955 she learned she would eventually go blind from an incurable eye disease. For the past 20 years she received and listened to talking books for the blind.
Services will be in Joplin, Mo., at the Parker Mortuary, Wednesday, October 10, at 2 p.m. followed by burial at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. Charles King, minister, will officiate. Pallbearers will be Bill Fenix, Jr., Douglas Fenix, Jackson Fenix, Cyle Pierson, Richard Smith and Anthony Wheeler. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. Wednesday until service time at the mortuary. Memorial contributions may be made to the Nature Conservancy.
