Josiah Failing was the first Mayor of Portland. He came to pioneer Portland with his family from New York City, and establish a hardware store and lumber yard there, later a bank. Son Henry was the genius behind the family, and Josiah left a position of great pwer in New York City, Commisioner of Dreying (Trucking by horse) in the mid 1800s.
Very influential in the Bapist Church, the Failing Family influenced ever major institution in Portland, if not the founders of them. , Libraries, Museums, Hospitals, etc.
Josiah was from a famous upstate New York, Mowhawk Valley family of Revolutionary War Heros and Prussian Doctors.
