Charter member of the Illinois Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame, Bradley University Sports Hall of Fame, Northern Illinois Track and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
When basketball coach at Paris, Il he took a dozen Paris High School teams to the state finals winning two state titles (1943 and 1947)and two runner-up finishes. While at Waterman, Il High School he was the cross country coach for 7 years and again at Paris for 21 years winning the first three IHSA cross country championships in 1946-48.
He last taught and coached in Fairbanks, Alaska High School before retiring in 1968.
After his retirement the Paris, IL High School refurbished the gymnasium and renamed it the Ernie Eveland Gym in his honor.
