John served with Company A of the Ninth Regiment of Virginia Cavalry. The Stafford Rangers. He enlisted on 15 October 1862. On 29 August 1863 he left without permission. He had returned by 1 September and got paid, so he was only gone a few days, but in November he left again. He came back until 28 April 1864 when he became absent until 22 May. He was present the final year and was paroled on 25 April 1865 at Burkesville. One of the founders of Calverton Baptist Church in 1901.
