Douglas Dwight Erskine 1939-2012

Doug died peacefully March 21, 2012 at St Luke's Hospital in Boise, Idaho.

He was born March 30, 1939 in Damariscotta, Maine, and stayed a New Englander until he died. His parents, Dwight R. Erskine and Ella M. Buckler, preceded him in death.

Doug was raised in Alna, Maine on a mixture of hard work, farm chores, excitement, adventure and freedom. He attended grade school in Alna and prep school in Boston, Massachusetts.

He attended college in Colorado Springs for one year and became an excellent skier there and then attended the University of Maine in Orno.

Doug had a lust for adventure and headed west as a young man. He fell in love with Yosemite National Park. He spent six years as a seasonal park ranger and winters as the Head Ski Patrol at Badger Pass Ski Area.

He met his wife, Margaret Davis, in the park. Margaret worked in the Park Hospital and Doug frequently brought injured and rescued tourists to her care. They were wed in the park chapel in 1964.

He served as permanent ranger for over 30 years in the following parks; Mt. Rainer, Glacier National Park, Rocky Mountain and back to Yosemite. He spent one year as a seasonal ranger in Death Valley in the grapevine district. He served in Alaska as the Fire Director for the National Park Service. His final transfer was to Boise in 1989, where he was the NPS Fire Director at the National Inter-agency Fire Center for 10 years. Doug was well liked and was a mentor to many people in the Park Service.

Doug is survived by his wife, Margaret; his sons: Curtis (Julia) and Clay (Josie); three granddaughters: Daisy, Alexa and Tilly; and by his brother, Jerald (Betty) and their children.

Doug was a man of few words. He had a love for the wild and a strong dedication to his family and career. His friends and family will celebrate his life with a gathering of food, old ranger stories and libation.

His ashes will be scattered by his request by family at a later time.
