Caroline is said to be the first white woman to arrive in the Hardwood-Foster City area. She was dedicated to establishing a good home amid Christian surroundings.

PJ left Sweden & arrived in Chicago, Illinois in 1879 at the age of 20. He traveled to Escanaba, Foster City & Hardwood in the Upper Peninsula looking for employment. He was hired by the railroad, where he became section boss, which was just then being run through to the mining area.
Caroline is said to be the 1st white woman in Foster City. Their son Charles, was the 1st boy born there in 1866. The family moved to Hardwood & in 1888 daughter Clara Olivia was born, followed by John Gideon in 1890, Ruth in 1892, twin daughters Lydia Mathilda (Robert Charlebois) & Lillian Marie in 1899, Clarence f in 1901, Helen Viola (Warner Backlund) in 1904, David died as a baby & Hulda was 12 when she died.
The Andersons purchased a General Store in 1890 & built a home in Hardwood where PJ lived until his death. Caroline raised their family & eventually died there also. More about this family can be found in the Breen Township Centennial Book: 1878-1978.
