The son of Thomas and Catherine (Murphy) English of County Limerick, Rev. Monsignor Thomas P. English came to the Los Angeles Diocese in 1927, having been ordained to the priesthood on June 12 of that year. He served at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Culver City; St. Elizabeth parish in Alta Dena; Holy Family parish in Artesia; and Our Lady of the Valley parish in Canoga Park before his long pastorate in Pomona. During his many years at St. Joseph's, the population of the parish grew so large that it was subdivided into four smaller parishes. Honored as a Monsignor in 1959, and a priest for 48 years, Msgr. English died in Chicago while on his way to visit family in Ireland at age 73.
