YORKTOWN - Betty Gene Blanton Emerson, born Jan. 13, 1927, died in her sleep at home on March 12, 2012, at the age of 85, after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's disease.
She was born to Earl and Emma Blanton, in Newport News, and lived her entire life on the Peninsula.
She graduated from Hampton High School in 1943 and married Charles Franklin Emerson in 1945. She was a bookkeeper for E.A. Harper and Co., for 30 years. She then became a secretary at BASF Corp., from which she retired in 1991. She was a member of the York Garden Club and enjoyed writing poetry about her family, her faith, her illness, and her friends, such as her best friends in life, Shirley Goodwin and Libby Pickel. She was a very active member of New Covenant Church until her decline in health. She also enjoyed attending Waters Edge Church. Her trust in God and her belief that Jesus Christ was her Lord and Savior was evident in everything she did. Her faith brought her pure joy and was the backbone of her life. Her strong belief greatly influenced many people throughout her life. Betty, known as "Paw" to her family, was the matriarch of a very large and loving family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and many in-laws.
She is survived by her siblings, Earl Blanton Jr., Felicia Crafford, Leon Blanton (Joanne), and Jeff Blanton (Anne). She is also survived by her children, Amy Moore, Wayne Emerson (Teeny), David Emerson (Terri), Melissa Artis (Bob), and Steve Emerson. Betty has 13 grandchildren, Richard Moore, Regan Brecke (Stefan), Miranda Moon (Austin), Chris Carter (John), Bethany Poteat (Philip), Joshua Emerson (Elisha), Eric Emerson (Darci), Katie Blanks (David), Timothy Knight, Steven Emerson, Tennille Emerson, Michelle Hux, and Kelsey Emerson. She has 33 great-grandchildren, Dylan, Megan, Mathias, Caroline, Avery Marie, Gibson, Jackson, Julia, Aubrey, Chase, Lila, Claire, Eden, Addy Lin, Caleb, Henry, Elias, Oliver, Lainey, Kaelyn, Gavin, Isaac, Evanie, Elorah, Mike, Nathan, Alex, Cameron, Leiyah, Alycia, Amiah, Emmalee, and Bentley.
The family thanks Brenda Cones, our angel from Home Helpers, for her tender, loving care and friendship.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight, at Amory Funeral Home. A celebration of Betty's life will be held at 1 p.m., Mar. 14, at New Covenant Church. Interment will follow at Hampton Veterans Memorial Gardens.
