Mae Virginia Sears weds P. R. Emerson
Bride in First Ceremony for Nearly 100 Years at West Cummington Church

Cummington, Feb. 16 For the first time in nearly 100 years a marriage was held at the Congregational church in West Cummington Thursday when Mae Virginia Sears daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Louis Sears of Cummington hill was married to Paul R. Emerson, son of Mr. And Mrs. Emerson of Haydenville, by Rev. Dudley Burr, pastor at a local church. No guests were present except the immediate families.

The bride was attended by her sister, Miss Helen Sears, while the groom had his brother William Emerson, as best man. Following a ceremony a luncheon was served to 18 guest at the home of the bride's parents. A little later the couple departed for a short wedding trip to Vermont, after which they will be home to friends at 11 Arnold ave. Northampton.

The bride is a graduate of local schools and Springfield Technical high and is employed at the Mary Marguerite tea room in Northampton. Mr. Emerson is employed by Ray Anderson of Ashfield. He has been recently discharged after 3 years in the engineer corps.

Paul Robert "Red" Emerson, 78, of 13 Main St., died Thursday at home.

He retired in 1979 from the Cummington Highway Department. Earlier, he had worked at the Betts Magnesium Mine and also several years as a lumberjack.

Born in Bradford, Vt., he was an Army veteran of almost four years during World War II. He served two years in the European theater before his discharge in 1945.

He also enjoyed hunting, trapping, fishing and playing horseshoes. He was also a member of the Country Cousins Square Dance Club, enjoyed camping, County Western music and playing the harmonica.

He leaves his wife, the former Mae Sears; two sons, Gary D. of Williamsburg and Robert C. of Goshen; a daughter, Margaret Daniels of West Cummington; six brothers, William of Northampton, Evan of Florida, Gordon of Palmer's Bondsville section, Water R. of Williamsburg's Haydenville section, Donald of Sunderland and Gerald of Northampton's Leeds section; a sister, M. Beatrice Wright of Westfield, six grandchildren; a great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Monday afternoon at the Charles A. Bisbee Funeral Home in Chesterfield, with burial in Bryant Cemetery in the spring. Calling hours are Sunday evening.
