Doris Elmore Church

Gaffney, SC - - Doris Elmore Church, a life-long resident of Gaffney, passed away on April 30, 2011 at the home of her daughters. Born on October 6, 1916, in Gaffney, she was the daughter of the late Oscar B. Elmore, Sr. and Pacolet Hill Elmore and the wife of the late Wayman Wales Church. Mrs. Church was retired from BellSouth and is a BellSouth Pioneer, was a member of the Business and Professional Women's Club, and a life-long member of First Baptist Church of Gaffney, where she was a member of the Gleaners Sunday School Class. Mrs. Church devoted her life to the nurture and care of her family. She was also very creative, enjoying all forms of needlework, wood-crafting, ceramics, painting and writing poetry. An avid cook, she was known county-wide for her "mile high" pound cakes. She is survived by two daughters, Joreita C. Shimer and Marian I. Church; a brother, Roy E. Elmore and wife, Connie, of Gaffney; a sister-in-law, Frances W. Elmore, of Gaffney; two grandsons, Jon Randolph Shimer, Jr. of Frederick, Maryland and James Wayman Shimer of Annapolis, Maryland; one great-grandson, Jon Randolph Shimer, III; two granddaughters, Julia Rose Shimer and Dakota Wales Shimer-Vest. She is also survived by three nieces, Jane Elmore Grauman of Statesville, Pam Elmore Turnage and Melissa Elmore Allison, both of Gaffney; eight nephews, W. Dean Allison and Michael L. Elmore, both of Gaffney, Timothy E. Elmore of Boiling Springs, Thomas C. Elmore of Columbia, Philip D. Elmore of El Paso, Texas, Jerry C. Grauman of Statesville, Ryan P. Brown of Belmont and Dr. David Brown of Greenville. She was predeceased by two brothers, O. B. Elmore, Jr. and John C. Elmore. A graveside service to celebrate her life will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at Oakland Cemetery conducted by Dr. M.B. Morrow, Jr
