HAINESVILLE—Michael Eliason, for years a sailor circumnavigating the world twice, and for the past 41 years a prominent resident of the town of Nasewaupee, died at his home here last Friday morning after being confined to his bed since last December with heart trouble and other old age complications. He was 82 years of age. Mr. Eliason was born in Bamle, Norway, October 13, 1842, and at the age of 16 went to sea, sailing wherever a boat could navigate and circling the globe twice. During the Civil war he worked along the Atlantic coast to South America and once had the honor of seeing President Lincoln in New York city.
In 1869, he came to Green Bay and in 1870 he was married to Miss Inger Jenson. At Green Bay he worked at the carpenter's trade and later with his brother-in-law, Lars Jenson, bought the schooner Laura and sailed between Green Bay and lake ports. In 1884, the two men sold out and bought a tract of wild land where Mr. Eliason cleared the farm on which he has lived until death.
Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs, Eliason, who five years ago were married for fifty years. Four survive together with their mother, as follows: Eli, James, Inga, and Mrs. Isaac Anderson, all of Hainesvllle, one grandson, Elton Eliason, son of Mr. and Mrs. Eli Eliason, also survives. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon from the home at 1:30 and at 2:00 from the Hainesville Lutheran church of which he was a devout member. Interment was made at the Hainesville cemetery. The Rev. Theodore Austad officiated.
