change the name from William Newton Eldridge to William Eldridge, ie to remove his middle name.
From family bible information his middle name was Newton.

Enlisted in Company G, North Carolina 54th Infantry Regiment on 23 May 1862
Promoted to Full Priv on 30 Nov 1863
Promoted to Full Sergeant on 06 May 1863
Promoted to Full Sergeant on 31 Oct 1864
He was taken prisoner by Union forces on 06 Apr 1865 and released Jun 1865.
Taken prisoner from battle at Sailor's Creek (aka Sayler's Creek, or Little Sailor's Creek, or Marshall's Crossroads)
