Elisabeth Anne "Betty" Tichenor Egan, of San Bernardino, died on June 28, 2009.

Betty Anne was a life-long Californian and one of the last remaining fourth-generation descendants of Stephen James Tichenor, the New Jersey entrepreneur who immigrated to California during the gold rush and built the 185-acre Tichenor Ranch in La Honda which remains in the family today.

Betty Anne was born on September 28, 1926 in San Francisco, California to Cyrus Colfax Tichenor, a third-generation Californian, and Anne Carroll, the daughter of Irish immigrants.

Betty Anne's father Cole had suffered a ruptured eardrum in World War I and this, along with tuberculosis, necessitated a move away from the fog and cold of San Francisco.

So in 1928, when Betty Ann was two years old, the family moved to the drier climate of rural Kernville, California. There Betty Anne attended a one-room schoolhouse and enjoyed times on the Kern River with her parents. By 1936, as Cole's health improved, he returned to his career in San Francisco and the family moved to Redwood City.

Betty Anne fondly remembered day trips from Redwood City to San Francisco with her mother on the ferry boat or the bus to attend the Golden Gate Expo of 1936.

In 1940, the family moved to Beverly Hills, and this turned out to be Betty Anne's favorite childhood home. Growing up in Los Angeles in the 1940s meant riding the bus with friends to the movies in downtown Los Angeles, shopping on Wilshire, and going to the beach in Santa Monica.

Betty Anne graduated from St. Monica's High School in 1944 and even as World War II wound down patriotically enrolled in Nurse's Training at St. Vincent's Hospital, Los Angeles. She received her bachelor's degree in Registered Nursing from St. Vincent's in 1948.

In 1949, Betty Anne married Loyola law student Gerald "Gery" Egan. Gery soon passed the bar and the couple bought a home and began to raise a family in Los Angeles. In 1959, Gery opened his own practice in San Bernardino, and the growing family moved to the city that would be Betty Anne's home for the rest of her life.

In 1970, as her eight children became more independent, Betty Anne returned to her profession as a registered nurse, and worked in the offices of Dermatology Medical Group for some 28 years. She seemed effortlessly to divide her time between career responsibilities and her children and growing brood of 13 grandchildren.

Betty Anne died peacefully at her home with two of her daughters, Maureen and Janet, by her side.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Gerald Egan II; eight children: Kathleen Egan of Crestline, Gerald Egan III (Leah Egan) of Palos Verdes, Sharron Egan (Dennis Williams) of Highland, James Egan of San Bernardino, Janet Egan (Lance McGee) of Highland, Barbara Egan of Mentone, Patrick Egan of San Bernardino, and Maureen Egan (Ron Robbins) of Riverside; and thirteen grandchildren: Ted Kachadorian of Beverly Hills and Robin Kachadorian of Carlsbad, CA; Yulan Egan of Stanford, CA and Gery Egan IV of Palos Verdes; Cara Egan-Williams of Santa Barbara, Megan Lewis of San Bernardino, and Molly Egan-Williams of Santa Barbara; Brenna Egan-McGee of San Diego, Kinsey and Miranda Egan-McGee, both of Highland; Alexander Egan Stefanakos of Mentone; Ryan and Jennifer Egan-Robbins, both of Riverside.
