Miss Anna C Edwards Dies at South Hadley
Former Teacher at Mount Holyoke Seminary and College Succumbs at 94
South Hadley, Dec 14 – Miss Anna Cheney Edwards, 94, an instructor at Mount Holyoke seminary, later a professor at Mount Holyoke college and one of the oldest alumnae in the country died this morning in her home, 11 Park street.
Miss Edwards was born July 31, 1835, in Northampton where she received her early education. From the time she was four years old she expressed the desire to become a teacher, and after completing her elementary education, entered Mount Holyoke.
After a year’s course at the seminary, she taught for two years in the Northampton public shools, but returned and completed her academic studies. She was graduated in 1859, and was instructor in literature at Mount Holyoke until 1863, when she resigned to become principal of Lake Erie seminary in Painesville, O., the daughter institution of Mount Holyoke.
She returned to Mount Holyoke in 1868, as instructor in literature, and professor of Christian evidence, later becoming instructor in geology.
Miss Edwards, together with Miss Elizabeth Blanchard, drew up the curriculum, and established the standards that brought about the charter, making Mount Holyoke a college in 1888. Her brilliant and inspiring work as a teacher of ancient literature, brought commendation from educational circles, and she published a handbook “Topics and Notes in Ancient Literature” which was well received in the educational world.
She took up the study of science, and later became a professor of geology at Mount Holyoke. With Miss Lydia Shattuck she started the work that began the building of Williston hall, the first science building the seminary had. It was erected in 1876. In 1888 after the seminary became a college she was given a master of arts degree by the University of Vermont, and in 1924, Mount Holyoke conferred a degree upon her of doctor of literature. In 1915 the class of 1890 established the Anna Edwards debating prize fund, which is awarded annually in the collegiate debates.
Up to the time of her illness a few weeks ago, her mind held all its keen faculties. Despite the fact that she retired in 1892, because of increasing deafness, she always kept in touch with college activities, and was a notable figure at the Founders’ day celebration, and commencement exercises.
Two years ago, Miss Edwards addressed the students in the chapel giving a 20-minute talk on seminary days.
