According to Sheriff J. B. Lively, the shooting occurred shortly after 5 AM Wednesday. He said Deputy Sheriff George Cheatman in Grapeland received a phone call from Mrs. Edens about 5:20 AM saying she had shot her husband and was jumping into the water well at the residence. Sherrif Lively related that Cheatman called him and he instructed him to call an ambulance and proceed to the Edens farm, located in Houston County north west of Grapeland on the old Elkhart road. Volunteer fireman assisted in removing Mrs. Edens from the well and she was returned to Community Memorial Hospital where she was placed in custody and under a 24 hour guard. Sheriff Lively stated that her husband was killed by two bullets fired from a .38 caliber pistol. He added that she would be carried before a judge or justice of peace for formal arraignment, exact time depending upon her condition. The sheriff also stated that two notes were left by Mrs. Edens, but contents were not disclosed.

You are not forgotten, loved one, nor will you ever be; as long as life and memory last, we will remember thee. We miss you now, our hearts are sore. As time goes by, we'll miss you more. Your gentle face, no one can fill your vacant place.
