Oldest Resident Of Brazos County, "Grandma" Baker,
Falls Into Last Sleep Wednesday In Her 99th Year

A beautiful, courageous and exemplary life came to a close Wednesday evening at 7 pm when Mrs. Rebecca Elizabeth Baker fell asleep in death at her home, 513 West 31st street "Grandmother" Baker, as she was known to hosts of friends, was 99 yrs, 2 months, and 23 days of age, and for many months had confined to her home. She was not sick, just tired and worn with the long years..The twilight days of her life were beautiful to her, and also an inspiration to her family and friends who came from day to day to cheer and comfort her. She was the oldest citizen of Brazos county, as far as known. Life to Grandmother Baker was always interesting and attractive and she loved to take part in all things of interest and helpfulness to her family and her home city. Until about a year ago this unusually active and mentally alert woman went to her church, and visited with friends. When she was 93 years old she took an airplane ride over Bryan, and expressed delight at the wonderful progress of science, and of her joy in the opportunity to "riding in the air."

Grandmother Baker was a consistent and happy Christian all her life. She was the oldest member of the First Methodist Church, and was honored as one of the mothers in the church throughout her long lite. Mrs. Rebecca Elizabeth Baker was born in the state of Georgia. Oct. 17, 1840, and had she lived to her birthday anniversary this year would have been 100 years old. She came to Texas and to Bryan in 1873, 67 years ago and lived here continuously until her death. Her husband, the late W. B. Baker, passed on many years ago.

Funeral service was held at the First Methodist church, this afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, with her pastor, Rev. Ervin Jackson officiating, assisted by Rev. J. R, Davidson, pastor of the Free Will Baptist church. Interment was made in Bryan City cemetery beside her late husband, with McCulloch-Dansby company in charge of all arrangements. Surviving are two daughters and one son, all of whom were with her when she passed away: Mrs. J. M. Johnson of Bryan; Mrs Florence Andrews of Oklahoma City, Okla. and E. Hershel Baker of Abilene. She is also survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. The pall bearers were chosen from her grandsons and great-grandsons, as follows: Willie Johnson, C. L. Baker of Navasota. Fred Cargill, Carl Trant, Walter Holden and Lorin Cargill.
