Union Civil War Veteran Soldier. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, he was the son of Paul and Rosa Eckstein. During the Civil War, he volunteered to serve in the Union Army and enlisted for one years' service with the 108th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Eckstein was mustered into Company B in September of 1862. Four months later, the regiment saw its first action at the Battle of Hartsville and nearly the entire regiment were captured. They were paroled and exchanged by January of 1863 and reorganized at Camp Dennison. Eckstein fought with his regiment at the Battles of Chattanooga and Bentonville and also participated in the Atlanta Campaign. After the war, he returned to Cincinnati and later died there at his residence in 1924 when he was 81 years old. He was the husband of Louisa Spreen Eckstein.
