Dr. Jonathan Jacob Eckhart, 73, of Deep Creek Lake, died Thursday, August 7, 2003, in Monongalia General Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va.

Born Nov. 7, 1929, in Eckhart Mines, he was the son of the late Charles and Helen (Radcliff) Eckhart.

Dr. Eckhart was a 1947 graduate of Allegany High School, he graduated from Lincoln State Chiropractic College in Indianapolis, Ind. and did graduate work at Frostburg State University. He practiced as a chiropractor in the Cumberland area for 50 years and was in partnership with Dr. Audie Klingler at Allegany Chiropractic Center.

He served in the Korean War 1952-1953 (Bronze Star) and served with the Maryland National Guard for 35 years retiring as a Colonel and was Commander of the Green Beret Special Forces. He was a member of the Mountain Lodge 99 AF and AM, the Valley of Cumberland Scottish Rite and the Ali Ghan Shrine Temple. He was a lifetime member of the Cumberland Elks BPO Lodge 114 and served as a director on the Foundation Board at Frostburg State University.

Dr. Eckhart enjoyed golfing, boating, bridge, reading and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife Sue (Bartlett) Eckhart; sons, J. Brad Eckhart and wife Joyce, of Orefield, Pa., Jay L. Eckhart and wife Susan, of Newport News, Va.; daughters, Debra Simpson and husband George, of Sugarland, Texas, and Penny L. Eckhart, of Oakland; step children, Don R. Sensabaugh Jr. and wife Sheryl; of Charleston, W.Va., David Sensabaugh and wife Nikole of Clarysville, and Sheri Sensabaugh-Betz and husband Russell, of Clarysville; 17 grandchildren; a Brother, H. Edwin Eckhart of Barton; and a sister, Edith Elvee and husband Richard, of Clarysville.

Friends will be received in the Hafer Funeral Service, P.A., Chapel of the Hills, 1302 National Highway, LaVale on Saturday, August 9, 2003, from 4 to 7 p.m. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment in Eckhart Cemetery with military rites accorded by the Combined Veteran Honor Guard. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Dr. Eckhart to the Shriners Crippled Children P.O.
