Betsy Ann Wright Earthman

Betsy Ann Wright Earthman passed away on December 29, 2008. She was born on November 27, 1947 in Lubbock, Texas. After graduating from Lubbock High School, Betsy attended Southern Methodist University and graduated from Texas Tech University.
Betsy led a life of service. She was a member of Pi Beta Phi Fraternity, and she served as the Treasurer, Assistant Treasurer, and Alumnae Rush Chairman of the Pi Beta Phi Houston Alumni Club. Betsy was also a member of the Junior League of Houston and the St. Thomas High School Mothers Club, as well as a founding member of the Covenant House Guild.A parishioner of St. Anne Catholic Church in Houston, Betsy was a founding member of the St. Anne's Guild, where she also served as President. She was also a member of the Anne's Pastoral Council. In addition, Betsy was a past member of the University of St. Thomas Board of Directors. While there, she was a member of the Student Life, Academic, and Development Committees, and she also served as Vice-President of the Public Affairs Committee. Betsy was also a co-creator of the Ethical Leadership in Action Award at the University of St. Thomas. She also served as past Chairman and past Vice-Chairman of the University of St. Thomas Mardi Gras Ball.
Betsy was a Lady Grand Cross of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. In 1996, she served as General Co-Chairman of the Annual Meeting and Investiture of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. She also received the Gold Palm of Jerusalem. Betsy was also a charter member of Legatus in Houston. In 2007, Betsy co-chaired the Holy Cross Chapel Gala. At the time of her passing, Betsy was serving on the Board of Directors for Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston.
An avid swimmer and tennis player, Betsy was a past member of the tennis leagues HLTA, USTA, and HTA. Betsy has also served on the Board of Directors for Mission Life Insurance Company. Betsy was an accomplished needle-pointer and was a past employee of the Needle House in Houston. Betsy served as Vice President of the Earthman Foundation, a private foundation that donated to various charities including Inner City Catholic Schools, Catholic Near East Welfare Association, the University of St. Thomas, Texas Children's Hospital, Texas Tech University, and San Jose Clinic.
Betsy will be buried with her hands wrapped in a maniturgium. A maniturgium is a cloth traditionally used to wipe the anointing oils from a new priest's hands. Betsy's son, Rev. Michael G. Earthman, presented the maniturgium to her after his ordination to the priesthood in 2007.
Betsy was the daughter of the late William Marion Wright and the late Janet York Wright of Lubbock. She was married to Michael R. Earthman for 37 years. She is also survived by her sisters Sally Burman of Orange, Texas, Susie McCloud of Allen, Texas, and brother Greg Wright of Wichita Falls, Texas; her sons Rev. Michael G. Earthman, Richard Earthman, and daughter Emily Earthman, all of Houston; numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.
The Visitation will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, January 1, 2009 at St. Anne Catholic Church, 2140 Westheimer Road, Houston, Texas, followed by the Vigil for the Deceased at 6 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, January 2, 2009, at 10 a.m. at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, 1111 St. Joseph Parkway, Houston, Texas. Burial will take place in the Garden of Gethsemani at Forest Park Lawndale. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Earthman Foundation, 2121 Sage Boulevard, Suite 245, Houston, Texas, 77056.
