Elsie Earp Brown, 94, died Friday, March 27, 2009 at Springmoor Retirement Community after a brief illness.
Mrs. Brown was a native of Johnston County, NC, daughter of the late Wiley Sherrod Earp and Willie Etta Creech Earp. She was a graduate of Selma High School and attended Meredith College. While working in the North Carolina Department of Agriculture she met and later married Frank H. Brown, Jr. of Cullowhee, NC in 1943. They lived for almost 40 years in Cullowhee until his death in 1984. She moved to Springmoor in 1990, and was a member of Hayes Barton United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Brown was devoted to her family and to the community in which she lived. During her years in western North Carolina she was a tireless companion to her husband in his many educational and civic activities in the region and the state. She was active in the Cullowhee United Methodist Church and in support of Western Carolina University. She was a 4-H Club sponsor, member of the Cullowhee Garden Club, and during the state governorship of Dan K. Moore she was appointed to the Governor's Advisory Committee for the Employment and Status of Women. Since moving to Raleigh, she has been a member of the Cameron Sunday School class at Hayes Barton United Methodist Church. At Springmoor she was a member of the Building and Grounds Committee for several years and was an active member of the "Hot Shots" singing group.
She is survived by her son, Frank H. Brown, III and his wife, Rebecca Revis Brown of Cary; her daughter, Martha Susan Brown of Charleston, IL; granddaughter, Carrah Brown Franke and her husband, Mike Franke of Cary; and granddaughter, Amy Leigh Brown of Durham.
A memorial service will be held at Springmoor Retirement Community in the Auditorium on Sunday, March 29, 2009 at 3:00 p.m.
The family will greet attendees following the service. Private inurnment service will be held at a later date in Cullowhee, NC to be followed by a memorial service at the Cullowhee United Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Frank H. Brown Family Scholarship Fund at Western Carolina University or to the Cullowhee United Methodist Church. For the scholarship fund, checks should be made payable to the Western Carolina University Foundation, designated for the Frank H. Brown Family Scholarship Fund, and mailed to WCU Foundation, 203 H. F. Robinson Building, Western Carolina University, Cullowhee, NC 28723. For the church, make checks payable to the Cullowhee United Methodist Church, designated for the Building Fund, and mail to Cullowhee United Methodist Church, PO Box 1267, Cullowhee, NC 28723.
The family would like to thank the staff of Springmoor Retirement Community, especially the nursing staff of the Stewart Health Care Center, and Hospice for their sensitive and loving care.
