Gerald Lamar "Jerry" Dyar, age 79, died at
home in Sheffield, Alabama on Thursday
September 23, 2010, after a five year illness.
Bill Bedsole will officiate at the 3 p.m.
Sunday service at Morrison Funeral Home,
Tuscumbia, Alabama. The family will receive
friends from 1 p.m. until the service. Private
burial will be at Sheffield Oakwood Cemetery.
Born in Gadsden, Alabama on April 28, 1931.
Mr. Dyar was the son of Flora Collins Dyar
and Frank B. Dyar. He, his father and
stepmother, Margaret Walters Dyar, came to
Sheffield, Al., in 1944, where he attended
schools, graduated Sheffield High School,
Florence Statee Teachers College. In 1950, he
married Betty Jo Burcham, the daughter of
William and Maymie Williams Burcham. He
Worked with his father in the family business,
Pepsi Cola Bottling Company and left there to
work with Pittsburg Plate Glass company in
Florence, Alabama. His 20 year career
covered branches in Birmingham, Tuscaloosa,
Montgomery, Alabama, Savannah and
Atlanta, Georgia. He owned Newman Glass
Company, in Newman, Georgia for another
20 years. He and Betty reurned to Sheffield
in 2005, after 30 years in Newman, Georgia.
He is survived by Betty: two sons, Lamar
(Jennifer) whose children are Heather,
Elizabeth, Madison, Madaline and Mary
Catherine and Frank Byron Dyar, 11; two
daughters, Holly Dyar and Ann Dyar Denton
"Wes", whose children are Tamsen and Tale.
He has 3 great- grandchildren and is survived
by an Aunt, Juanita Dyar Lowry, Gadsden, Al.,
and many cousins.
Jerry was active in Civic Clubs and Baptist
Churches in each city and served as first
president of the Boys Club in Tuscaloosa in
the late '50s. In Sheffield he had been an
active member of Sheffield First Methodist
Church, working with the Good Ole Boys.
At the time of his death, he was a member of
Central Baptist Church, Newman, Georgia. He
was a former President of the SHS '40s
Alumni association, had been a part of Jack's
Coffee Club as well as the River Rats.
