Be Wednesday


Juan V. Durst, 61, pioneer electrical engineer in this area, died yesterday afternoon at a local sanitarium after a long illness. His home was at 740 Rutherford Street.

Mr. Durst reputedly was one of the first persons to install a moving electrical sign in Shreveport, one of the first to install talking pictures, and also air conditioning units to this area. He reputedly built some of the first radios used in this part of the country. He is reported to have experimented with television 15 years ago.

Born in Tyler, Texas, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Durst, pioneer family in Texas. He attended the Bliss Electrical College in Washington, D.C., from which he received his degree.

Besides his widow, Mrs. Ruth Baker Durst, he is survived by one son, Juan Durst, Jr., Shreveport; two daughters, Mrs. Max Bowerman, Corpus Christi, Texas and Mrs. Mike Leyendecker, Dallas, Texas; one sister, Mrs. Zeffie D. Langard; one brother, Paul Durst, Tyler; and three grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow under the direction of the Osborn Funeral Home with Mr. Walter Betz of the First Church of Christ, Scientist, officiating.

Pallbearers include Will Sale, Charles Serwich, Otis Johnson, W.F. Johnson, M.D. Fridge, and Randolph Querbes.
