Debra, known to family, friends, and colleagues as Debbie or Maria, was born and raised in San Diego. She lost her long, hard-fought battle with cancer on Sunday, September 30. Debbie attended Madison High School in Clairemont, graduating in 1969.

Following in the footsteps of her sports loving family, especially her paternal grandfather, Cedric Durst, former New York Yankee and manager of the Pacific Coast League San Diego Padres from 1939-1943, she was always actively involved in outdoor activities, trying to keep up with and sometimes surpassing her brother and cousins' running, jogging, swimming, and skating.

She starred in track while attending Madison High School and continued at a high level of involvement while attending UCSD. A sprinter on the "Mickey's Missiles" track team, she was scheduled to participate in the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City when her track career was cut short by a knee injury.

After completing her undergraduate studies at UCSD, Debbie received her masters degree from SDSU and began her professional career as a social worker at the San Diego Center for Children. From that time on, she dedicated her entire professional career to improving the quality of children's lives.

Only a very special type of person with inner strength and compassion for others can be successful in this type of work. Debbie proved that she had those characteristics and more. She not only exhibited this strength and determination in her professional life but also as she fought to overcome the cancer that gradually took control of her life.

Throughout this struggle, she was always outwardly positive and supportive to family and friends around her. She was blessed with the rare ability to understand, communicate, and appropriately reach all of those whose lives she touched.

Debra Marie will be greatly missed by her extended family and friends but especially by her daughter, Nicole; her father, Cedric Durst Jr.; her mother, Theresa Schaffer, her brother, Jon Durst, his wife Cheryl, and their children, Travis Cedric and Christina; and her loving partner of 14 years, Joni Oak.

A celebration of Debra's life will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, October 4, at the gazebo area of the Mission Bay Hilton Hotel.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Children's Hospital Center for Child Protection, South Bay Trauma Program.
