DURKIN Anne Estelle Glover Durkin, age 81, died in the Jewish Home for the Elderly on Saturday, October 22, 2005. Born in Walterboro, SC she was a Newport News, Virginia resident for many years before moving to Connecticut in 1997. She was a graduate of Columbia College in Columbia, SC where she earned her BS in Chemistry and the Medical College of VA (now Virginia Commonwealth University) where she obtained a Pharmacist's degree. Prior to her retirement she was a Pharmacist in Newport News, VA. She is survived by her devoted daughter, Margaret Smith and her husband, Wayne of Fairfield, CT and one granddaughter, Anne Michelle Smith of Fairfield. She was admired by her family as a courageous woman who pursued a professional career at a time when many women chose not to and she is best remembered for her quick wit and sense of humor. She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas W. Durkin; seven brothers and one sister. Friends are invited to attend a graveside service on Saturday, October 29, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. at Peninsula Memorial Park Cemetery, in Newport News, VA. All prior calling hours have been omitted. The 5:15 p.m. mass on December 19, 2005 at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 545 Stratfield Road, Fairfield will be celebrated in her memory . The Shaughnessey Funeral Home, 50 Reef Road, Fairfield is in charge of arrangements.
