A native of Peñasco, NM, he was the son of Ricardo and Raquel Durán, born on September 3. 1925.
Benito graduated from Peñaco High School and earned his bachelor and master's degrees at New Mexico Highlands University.
Benito was a schoolteacher, principal and director of instruction and superintendent of schools in Peñasco, Española and Ojo Caliente schools for 31 years. Benito worked for Rio Arriba County as a purchasing agent, manpower coordinator and low-income housing director.
A World War II veteran, he served with the Sixth Armored Division in England, France and Germany.
Benito was an active member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, life member of the Disabled American Veterans and member of the American Retired Persons Assn.
Benito is survived by his wife, Lydia, two sons, Robert and Joe Michael, both of Taos, NM, a daughter, Christine Rodríguez of Española, NM, two brothers, Gilbert of Albuquerque, NM and Juan of Taos, NM, five sisters, Isabel Chacón, Josie Shapiro, Raquel Torres, all of Albuquerque, NM, Paulette Atencio of Chama and Rosalina Gonzáles of Taos, NM, three grandchildren and other relatives.
Funeral services are scheduled for this morning, November 12, 1998 at 10:00 a.m. at La Iglesia de Santa Cruz de la Canada. Burial will be at 12:00 p.m. at Santa Fé National Cemetery, Santa Fé, NM. Serving as pallbearers will be Albert Vigil, Jesús Gonzáles, Miguel Atencio, Cipriano Durán and Matthew Durán. Honorary pallbearers will be Teofik Martínez, Manuel Martínez, Henry Pacheco, Ernest Váldez, Richard Gonzáles and Julio Rodarte.
The family suggest in lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to Iglesia de Santa Cruz de la Canada.
