Two Die In Flaming Copter Crash
One of four helicopters being ferried from Corpus Christi to Van Nuys, Calif., crashed and burned on a ranch here Wednesday afternoon killing two men in the craft. Justice of the Peace Al Kennedy of Ingram said a ranch hand reported a rotar blade of the craft spun off and the helicopter crashed into the side of a steep canyon.
Site of the crash was the Schulz Ranch, about five miles east of Kerrville.
The crash, which occurred about 2:30 p.m., set off a fire on the ranch that swept across a broad area of the rugged terrain. Firemen from Kerrville and Center Point fought the fire.
Judge Kennedy reported the two men in the craft were burned beyond recognition. The bodies of the crash victims were taken to Brooke General Hospital, Ft. Sam Houston by an Army helicopter ambulance.
Army officials at Ft. Sam Houston said the helicopters were assigned to the 336th Aviation Co., an Army Reserve unit in Van Nuys, a section of metropolitan Los Angeles.
It was learned the four helicopters were en route to California from an aeronautics depot maintenance center in Corpus Christi. The craft had over nighted Tuesday at International Airport in San Antonio, and were continuing the journey to the West Coast Wednesday, with El Paso their overnight stop.
After the crash, the remaining three helicopters were ordered to return to San Antonio where they were grounded, pending a probe into cause of the crash.
