Merle was the oldest of four children. He attended school in Esterbrook and Douglas, graduating from Douglas High School. After graduating he worked construction for various companies. He entered the Navy on March 9, 1943 and was discharged on Jan. 31, 1946. After leaving the Navy he returned and attended the University of Wyoming and later the University of New Mexico.
On March 10, 1952, he married Mona Rae Batton in Cheyenne. They then moved to Buffalo and operated a ranch for Tye and Eddie Moore. In 1963 he and Mona purchased the Tabor Hotel in Glenrock, and operated it until they sold it in 1974. They later moved to Douglas, where he resided until his death.
Survivors include his mother, Vera Dunham of Douglas; daughters, Dixie Miller of Worden, Montana; and Nancy Johnson of Glenrock; son, Lee Dunham of Eagle River, Alaska; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mona; his father, Peyton; one sister and two brothers.
