Suggested edit: I found a mention of his Civil war record in a biography of his grandson, Dr. Leslie Stow Whitaker.


Aaron W. Drew, who was a carpenter by trade and a representative of a family founded in New England in the Colonial days. He became a pioneer in Iowa and represented that state as a gallant soldier and officer of the Union in the Civil war. In 1861 he enlisted in Company I, Tenth Iowa Volunteer Infantry and he served until the close of the war, he having been promoted from first lieutenant to captain in May, 1863, having been advanced to the rank of major in July, 1865, and in the following month received commission as lieutenant colonel. Colonel and Mrs. Drew were residents of California many years and here their death occurred.
