Alexander, an iron foundry "puddler" by trade, was the son of Henry T. Drake and Rebecca (or Rebecka) Slaughter. He married Margaret Miller in Richmond on 19 April 1855. They had at least five children: Alexander, Ann, John Alexander, Ida Florence, and an unnamed infant.

He enlisted as a Private in Company "G", 2nd Battalion, Richmond Local Defense Troops on 8 May 1864. That unit was soon after merged with the 6th Battalion, RLDT, to form the 2nd Regiment, RLDT, where he served in Company "I".
