Mary was the daughter of Nathan C. Downing (1807-1858) and Martha Clark (1813-1855).

Boston Birth Records show that Mary was born at Boston on 7 March 1850. Her family had moved to Boston from Weare, New Hampshire, about 1845.

Her mother died in Boston when Mary was but 5 years old. Following her death, her family moved to SE Minnesota in 1856 or 1857 for the better climate.

Following her father's death in 1858, when Mary was 8 years old, she was raised by her sister Martha J. and brother-in-law Spafford WILLIAMS at Money Creek, Houston Co., Minnesota [1860, 1865, 1870 State and U.S. Censuses].

At the age of 20, Mary married Henry Clay CHASE at Money Creek, Houston Co., Minnesota, on 21 January 1871, in a ceremony officiated by the Rev. Elder D.W. SMITH, a Baptist minister [CW Pension Application 296483]. Henry was the widower of her older sister Lydia Ann.

Over the years, Henry, a Civil War Veteran, was a grocer, dry goods merchant, bank cashier, and a land and lumber dealer.

By 1875, Henry and Mary removed to Janesville, Waseca Co., Minnesota, where they remained and were regularly enumerated in State and U.S. Censuses.

In 1885 and 1895 State Censuses, Mary and Henry were enumerated with George CHASE, who was born in Vermont circa 1878.

Henry died at Janesville, Waseca Co., Minnesota on 29 April 1916 of apoplexy [Waseca Co. VR, Deaths].

After Henry's death, Mary filed for and received a Federal pension based on Henry's Civil War service.

Mary died at Milltown, Polk Co, Wisconsin on 2 February 1925 [His and Her Civil War Pension No. 378142; Her Obituary, see below].

MRS. HENRY C. CHASE DIES
A telephone received yesterday by A. D. Sackett from Milltown, Wisconsin, announces the death of Mrs. Henry C Chase. She passed away Monday at the age of seventy-five years. For some years she had been an invalid, unable to walk on account of partial paralysis. Until a year or two ago she was a resident of Janesville, having lived here from the early days. Her husband for many years was a prominent business man of the town engaged in the mercantile business. The remains will be brought to Janesville for interment.
The remains were brought to Janesville today at one o'clock and were taken to the ARNOLDT undertaking parlors, where simple funeral services were conducted, Rev. Brandon of Waseca officiating. The deceased was a lifelong member of the Episcopal Church. Had she lived until the fourth of April she would have been 75 years old.
Among those from out of town to attend the funeral were Mrs. D. J. Dodge and D. C. Cordry of Minneapolis. Mrs. Dodge was a lifelong friend of Mrs. Chase and in the early history of Janesville was her companion and associate. Mr. Cordry is a nephew. Other relatives to attend were Fred Williams and Mrs. W. D. Belden of Caledonia.
