Wilma Jean (Downey) Altman, 79, of Danville, died at 12:44 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2009, at Provena Covenant Medical Center Champaign-Urbana.

She was born Aug. 13, 1930, in Danville, to Albert and Minnie Downey. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Alberta Nixon; and a brother, Bud Downey. On March 7, 1953, she married Robert Eugene Altman of Danville.

Jean is survived by her husband of 56 years; a son from a previous marriage, Larry Edward Williams of Springfield, Mo., and his wife, Joyce Ann Williams; a granddaughter, Christa Dawn Estes of Nixa, Mo., and her husband, Dr. Preston Clark Estes; and four great-granddaughters, Jacqueline Elise Estes, Audrey Elizabeth Estes, Hillary Elaine Estes and Sophia Ellison Estes.

Jean began her 30-year career at the Piggly Wiggly (Eisners) in 1948 and worked in the meat department at Kroger for 25 more years before retiring in 1978. She attended Danville schools. She accepted Christ as her savior and faithfully worshipped at First Church of the Nazarene. She also was an active student in the Friendship Sunday School Class at the church. During her 29 years of retirement, she enjoyed travel around the United States and several trips to Europe and a once-in-a-lifetime tour of Israel with her husband, son and granddaughter.

Jean spent a lifetime helping family members and friends through difficult situations.

She loved to play card games with her husband and several close friends. She loved to shop for special treasures and enjoyed collecting keepsakes from her many travels. She had a lifetime filled with music thanks to talented family members. Her greatest joy was in her exceptional marriage to Bob and her family.

On behalf of Jean and the family, a heartfelt thanks goes to those wonderful caregivers who ministered to Jean during her extended illness just prior to her death.
