She was born in Portland, Maine and graduated from The Waynflete School. While attending Wheelock College in Boston, Mass., Barbara met and married Herbert Henry Dow, II, of Midland, on Sept. 16, 1951. She later earned a master of fine arts degree from Central Michigan University.
A lifelong philanthropist, Barbara was a leader in a wide variety of regional and national organizations. She served as trustee and secretary-treasurer of the Herbert H. and Barbara C. Dow Foundation from 1957 to 1996 and as president from 1996 until her death She was a founding member of the Northwood University Town and Campus Executive Women's Board and served as its chairman. Barbara also served on the boards of the Grace A. Dow Memorial Library, the Midland Community Center, the Midland Hospital Fund Development Board and the Barrows Neurological Foundation. In 1979, Barbara was honored as a Distinguished Woman of Northwood University.
An artist and benefactor of the arts, Barbara was past president of the Midland Arts Council and the Post Street Workshop. At the time of her death she was serving as trustee emeriti of the Interlochen Center for the Arts and trustee of the Phoenix Art Museum. A ceramic artist who had exhibited in art shows and galleries, she also promoted the arts as trustee of the American Craft Council, Interlochen Center for the Arts, Cranbrook Art Academy and the Midland Center for the Arts. Barbara was a founding member of Matrix: Midland.
Barbara is survived by her son, Willard "Hank" Dow of Dallas, Texas; two daughters, Pamela Dow of Paradise Valley, Ariz. and Dana Schuler of Cincinnati, Ohio; and three grandchildren, Jonathan Schuler, Grace Schuler and Genevieve Schuler.
