Birth: Sep. 28, 1826
Death: Feb. 28, 1868
Pierce County
Wisconsin, USA

Francis served in Company A 44th Wisconsin Infantry during the Civil War

We learn from a resident of Clifton that Frank Doe, who has long been a resident of the above town, committed suicide on Thursday night the 25th ult.
The deceased who was a farmer has for some time past been subject to fits of insanity. On Thursday afternoon he went to the house of his brother, who lives in the same place. In the course of the afternoon he wanted his wife to go home with him which she was afraid to do on account of his insanity. He thereupon went home alone. It is not known whether he had previously contemplated suicide, but it appeared from the position in which he was found the next morning, and the surrounding circumstance, that this horrible tact was committed that evening or during the night. It would appear that he first attempted to kill himself with a drawing knife with which he hacked and chopped his face and head in a terrible manner, cutting off his nose and also chopping one hand nearly off. He then took a knife and stabbed himself about twenty places and cut his throat from ear to ear, but did not sever the large vein nor the windpipes. It seemed that in his terrible frenzy at the failure of the speedy accomplishment of his purpose he then took his gun which was heavily loaded and placed the muzzle against his breast by some means discharged it blasting a hole nearly through his body.
For some reason no one of the family went near his house as we are informed till the next morning, when his brother went in and found him terribly mangled and dead and informed the neighbors.
The body and room in which it was found presented a ghastly and horrible spectacle. When our informant left, the neighbors were making arrangements for his funeral.
Prescott Journal 3-7-1868

We learn that Frank Doe, of the town of Clifton committed suicide on the 254th ult. It appears that he first attempted to kill himself with a drawing knife, then
taking a knife inflicted a number of fearful gashes
upon his person, and to complete the horrible deed of self-destruction, took a gun, placing the muzzle of it against his body by some means succeeded in discharging it, blowing a hole nearly through himself. This terrible deed is supposed to have been committed while he was in a fit of insanity. Pierce County Herald 3-12-1868
