Rachel E. Belter, 94, West Fargo, ND passed away Wednesday, March 21, 2012 at Sheyenne Crossings, West Fargo.

Rachel Elizabeth Dittmer was born July 26, 1917 to Carl H. and Ida M. (Rick) Dittmer at Leonard, ND. She was baptized and confirmed at the Bethel Moravian Church, rural Leonard. Rachel graduated from Casselton High School in 1935 and in 1937 she received her elementary teaching degree from Jamestown College, where she was a soloist with the college choir. She taught primary grades at Leonard and Riverside School, Kindred, ND.

Rachel married Wesley P. Belter on August 24, 1939 at the Bethel Moravian Church. They began farming near Davenport in 1940 and in 1946 they moved to the Dittmer farmstead north of Leonard. Wesley and Rachel retired to Casselton in 1979. Wesley passed away February 13, 1992. Rachel remained active in the Casselton community until her move to Fargo in 1997. In 2007, she moved to Sheyenne Crossings, West Fargo.

Rachel's activities consisted of homemaking, church and community activities. She was a member of the Bethel Moravian Women's Fellowship, Davenport Homemakers, Farm Bureau and Bonanza Belles. She was active in the Republican Party and for 42 years she had a father, husband or son serving in the North Dakota State Legislature.

Rachel loved music. She began her musical career at age 9 when she won the Cass County Vocal Competition and performed on WDAY radio. She shared her musical talents by giving children piano lessons, singing and playing for special occasions, especially weddings and funerals. Rachel was the organist and choir director for the Bethel Moravian Church for 35 years. She directed the Leonard Fall Festival Community Choir and for 11 years sang with the Casselton Community Chorus. For many years Rachel directed the German Choir for Pioneer Days at Bonanzaville and until recently she directed the choir for the Sheyenne Crossings chapel services. In 2006, the Moravian Music Foundation honored her with the James V. Salzwedel Award for excellence in church music.

She is survived by her four children, Charles (Lynda) of Fargo, Elizabeth Ann (Harvey) Larson of Burnsville, MN, Wesley (Judy) of Fargo, John (Nancy) of Burnsville, MN; seven grandchildren, David (Kim) Larson, Jennifer (Jon) Bonneville, Michael (Jennifer) Belter, Matthew (Rachael) Belter, Mark (Bridget) Belter, Rachel Belter, Daniel Belter; ten great grandchildren, Joshua, Ellen and Benjamin Larson, Elizabeth and Kathryn Bonneville, Kylie, Keira, Nora, Nicholas and Luke Belter; and two sisters, Doris West of West Fargo, and Grace Oyan of Peoria, IL.

Visitation will be Friday, March 30 from 5 to 7, with a prayer service at 7, in West Funeral Chapel, West Fargo.

The funeral will be Saturday, March 31, at 11 in Bethel Moravian Church near Leonard.

Burial will be at the Bethel Moravian Cemetery.
