Josephine Elena Chirco, 96, entered the arms of the Lord on January 26, 2010. Born in Detroit, Michigan on September 22, 1913.
Preceded in death by her loving parents, Santo and Ninfa DiMaggio, infant son, Michael, beloved husband, Salvatore Chirco, son and daughter-in-law, Michael (Lana) Chirco.
Josephine is survived by her sons, Santo (Rose) Chirco and Anthony (Angela) Chirco; grandchildren, Josephine Marie (Carl) Munaco, Dr. Jacqueline Chirco (Dr. Steve) Cogswell, Maria Chirco, Michele (Greg) Fornari, Josephine Sara (Howard) Mortenson, Roseanne (Jay) Pancost, Salvatore (Angie) Chirco, Joseph (Jennifer) Chirco, Michael (Michelle) Chirco, Josephine Ninfa (Sam) Munaco, Francesca (Mario) Sanchez, Gina (Norman) Gomez, Salvatore (Stella) Chirco, Gaspare (Gretchen) Chirco; 45 great-grandchildren, and nine great-great grandchildren.
The matriarch of a strong Italian family, Josephine was the ninth of ten children and was the sole remaining sibling. Her strength and determination helped her fight cancer three previous times, her fourth battle lasted a little over six weeks.
She excelled in school, graduating at the age of 14 and received a full scholarship to the University of Michigan, with dreams of being a teacher. She was not allowed to obtain that degree, as her father needed her to care for her ailing mother.
Josephine married Sam on October 5, 1929 at the age of 16 and paved the path for her sons, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, showing them that with hard work and determination you can attain your dreams.
Not wanting her sons to follow in the bar business Sam had established, Josephine began building homes. Thus began the Chirco Homebuilding empire in Michigan and Tucson. On her 90th birthday, she was awarded an honorary degree in education from the University of Michigan.
Josephine leaves a ever-lasting legacy, passing on her faith in God, and deep love of family. She was an amazing teacher.
