The announcement of the death of Mr. Dexter, like a cloud passing over the disk of a summer's sun, threw over many hearts a shadow of sorrow, dissipated only by the thought that the spirit had passed on and behind the veil to higher duties and sublimer joys. Mr. D. was a native of this town where he resided many years. He was an active, industrious and enterprising merchant – – a good citizen – – a kind neighbor and friend – – ever ready and engaged heart and hand in advancing the best interests of our community. The fragrance of his good deeds will ever linger sweetly in the memory of those who were blest by them. The remembrance of his many virtues and sympathizing spirit will be a fountain of consoling and cheering thought to those who were subjects of his kind assiduities and devoted love, as a husband, father and friend. The physical man wasted away under a flattering disease but the spiritual was sustained and at last upborn on the bright pinions of Christian faith to the spirit land of the blest.

The passing spirit gently fled,
sustained by grace alone;
Oh, may such grace on us be shed
and make our end like thine.
