In memory of the Rev. Mr. Jedediah Dewey, First Pastor of the Church in Bennington.

Who, after a laborious life in the gospel ministry, resigned his office in God’s temple for the sublime employment of immortality.

Of comfort no man speak!
Let’s talk of graves, and worms, and epitaphs;
Make dust our paper, and with rainy eyes

JEDIDIAH DEWEY, First Pastor of the Church in Bennington, Who after A Laborious Life in the Gospel Ministry, Resign'd his Office in God's Temple For the Sublime Employment of Immortality. Decm'br 21st 1778,In the 65th Year of Age. Of Comfort no Man Speak. Let's talk of Graves, and worms, And Epitaphs, Make dust our Paper and with Rainy Eyes Write Sorrow in the Bosom Of the Earth....[the epitaph is from King Richard II in Act 3 of Shakespeare's "Life & Death of Richard the Second".]...[other information...Jedidiah Dewey was born April 11, 1714 in Westfield, Hampden, Mass, the son of Jedidiah Dewey (1676-1727, see find a grave at Westfield, Mass.) and Rebecca Williams (1685-?). He married Mindwell Hayden (1713-1760) and was the father of Mindwell Dewey (1737-1781,see Mindwell Hopkins at find a grave at Old Bennington Cemetery)].
