Eva Leona Devenport was born on August 22, 1860 in Lincoln Township, Morrow County, Ohio to Alfred and Lodema (Stewart) Devenport.

On October 5, 1880 in Ravenna, Michigan she married James Bates and together they had 9 children, Myrtle May, Herbert James, Alfred Lyle, Edith, Bertha, Ethel, Hazel, Mabel, and James Lester Bates.

She died on April 17, 1926 in Big Rapids, Michigan at the age of 66.

Special thanks to my cousin Mary Ann Cassady for typing and sending her obituary to me.

Mrs. James Bates succumbs as result of auto accident.

Mrs. James Bates, who was injured last week in an automobile accident, died Saturday afternoon in this city. Pneumonia had developed in connection with broken ribs and Mrs. Bates was ill but two days.

It will be remembered James Bates of Houghton County, formerly of Stanwood, died March 9 in the north. His widow accompanied his remains to Mecosta county for burial. She stayed instead of returning to the north. On the way home from Grand Rapids, where she had been taking baths to relieve rheumatism, she sustained the injuries that resulted in her death.

Mrs. Bates was born August 22, 1859, in the State of Ohio. Her maiden name was Eva Davenport. She married Mr. Bates, a mill man, October 5, 1877 at Ravenna, Michigan. The couple spent 6 years at Ravenna and then removed to Stanwood, where they made their home for 6 years. They afterward went to Lake County, where the family stayed twenty years. About 9 years ago Mr. Bates and his wife went to Houghton County.

There are eight children living out of a family of nine, and they speak of their mother as one of the most devoted and kind of women. The sons and daughters are Herbert Bates of Donkin, Alfred of Flint, Edith Buffin, Grant Center, Bertha Berringer, Grand Rapids, Ethel McCraney, Cadillac, Hazel Warner, Grant Center, Mabel Worst, Dighton. Myrtle VanLieran is a daughter who died 15 years ago. There are 23 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The body of the departed was taken to the Wagner Chapel and the funeral services will be held at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning, conducted by the Rev. A. T. Light of Grant Center. The remains will be interred in Highland View Cemetery, and at the same time the body of the late Mr. Bates will be taken from the vault and buried also.
