Anton Henry (sometimes called Henry Anton) Deppe was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States in about 1843. He enlisted in the Union army in January 1864, and he was discharged in July 1865. He married Mary Elizabeth Russell 9 Aug. 1865 in Randolph County, Illinois. In 1870 Henry and family were living in Randolph County, Illinois, but in 1880 they were in Labette County, Kansas. The 1900 census finds them back in Randolph County. In 1904, Henry was admitted to the Illinois Soldiers and Sailors Home at Quincy, where he died of pneumonia on 5 Feb. 1905.

Henry's muster papers describe him as 5'7-1/2" tall, with auburn hair, hazel eyes, and a dark complexion.
